The Landfill Acceptance Checklist: What Goes In?

When evaluating waste streams such as sw408, sw311 (waste oil or oily sludge), or sw421 (a mixture of scheduled wastes), we must adhere to exact guidelines. Our facility strictly requires all materials to meet the following parameters before acceptance:
Chemical State: The waste must be environmentally inert and chemically stable. We only accept materials that have been stabilised, such as metals in the form of metal oxides or hydroxides.
Physical State: We require the waste to be mainly inorganic, presented in a solid or sludge form. It must not be physically or chemically reactive.
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Thresholds: A rigorous Total Organic Carbon (TOC) limit of 10% or less on a dried weight basis is enforced. The only exception we make is for rubber sludge, which may have a Total Organic Carbon (TOC) of up to 50%.
Clear Exclusions: To eliminate unqualified hazards and protect our environment, we strictly prohibit radioactive materials, explosive substances, pathogenic or infectious materials, and municipal solid wastes.
To ensure absolute DOE compliance, the Department of Environment, under the First Schedule of the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005, has rigidly categorised permissible waste streams. Below is a reference guide outlining the common scheduled wastes we accept for final disposal, provided they successfully meet the stringent chemical and physical parameters detailed above:

Our robust containment architecture comprises:
Layer 1: A 600 mm compacted soil liner, engineered with a minimum permeability of 1 x 10^-7 cm/s.
Layers 2 & 3: Dual layers of 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane liners.
